Day +8: I gotta cold
No 13 hours sleep last night. The Dick Tracy gizmo on my wrist is connected via wi-fi to a number monitoring stations around the place that show is your bed's flat, sitting up, what you pulse and Blood pressure are and all sorts of other stuff. As inevitably happens with new computer gear, there was a glitch that crashed the wi-fi on this floor, even the guest internet access. No problem - early night. Except that the computer in my room (and, presumably, everyone else's) decided to beep every 4 seconds to alert me to the fact that it couldn't talk to the network. So at 11 pm I was reduced to watching "Are You Being Served" on PBS. Sophisticated British humour at its best.
Got up at 8 a.m., ordered breakfast and got my laundry organised and in the machine. It was cooked by about 9:30 and I shoved it in the drier which I think gets its heat from a 5 watt light bulb as it took 2 hours to dry half a dozen shirts and some garments of a more intimate nature.
Susan arrived shortly after 10, having encountered only one "asshole" (I wish she'd learn to pronounce that correctly) in a black pickup truck the whole way from Asheville. We sat and yacked for ages and she very kindly went and checked on my washing from time to time so I now have a load of clean gear. Might be my last visit from her for a while as they're expecting snow here and in Asheville (and, I assume, everywhere in between) over the weekend and it wouldn't be a nice drive. She brought me emergency Gatorade supplies.
While she was here, my nurse came with what my doctor delicately referred to as a "brain masher" to remove some snot from my nose for lab work. It turns out that I have a kid's ailment, which I think she referred to as "SRV" though that stands for Stevie Ray Vaughan and I'm sure I would have noticed. Anyway, this is likely to extend my stay here so that I'm here for another 2 weeks. At least I'll be able to try everything on the room service menu.
My "counts" are way down as they are meant to be at this point. My white blood cells and platelets in particular are getting close to zero which means I can catch anything that's going around and will bleed gallons if I cut myself (thanks for the loan of the electric razor, Dave). Despite all that, I'm feeling better every day.
Final stroke of brilliance last night - hook the laptop up to the TV to watch Dr Strangelove on the big screen. Seemed an appropriate movie in light of our new Pres. Then I took a look at the TV picture and the picture on my laptop and, blow me down, allowing for perspective, the laptop has an apparently much larger screen. And I have brought my fancy wireless headphones so the sound is better, too.
